Let's talk religion just for a bit

So I’m a fairly open christian. I don’t believe the point of spirituality is to go out and tell someone else they are wrong. I believe it’s a uniting force and common ground that everyone should be able to share. I mean spirituality is in just about any activity. The spirit of the Lord, the spirit of the game, the spirit of the hunt, the spirit of us all. To have spirit isn’t exclusive to religion, and I don’t feel like these are separate contexts of use. I believe this same spirit has the same meaning in all of those situations. It’s the spirit.

As a fairly open christian and having my warped views on life, I often find myself discussing and explaining my views. Lately in life I’ve surrounded myself by the constructive inquisitive type, so these talks have generally been happy discussions, with some agreements and hardly no negative feedback.

But growing up with these beliefs was a struggle. I went to a christian academy and later a christian home school program, so I was used to being force-fed these rules and guidelines for life. It only seems funny to me now that while I was in class and arguing these lectures, students in the class fervently opposed my thoughts and would obviously support their school. Now I look at these same people who believed in these guidelines and I see they either don’t care or are super religious. And it seems rather odd that while in almost all areas of my life I’ve been an extreme person, always trying to take a stand on one far end (usually by myself), that in this one instance I’m somewhere in between all of it.

I believe in understanding and unity. I don’t believe spirituality or religion is something worth getting upset over, only joyous. I know, joyous is such a church word, but I really do feel that way. I love discussing it and thinking about it. I say all this to bring up a video I recently saw. It’s a rather long video of three girls, 2 caucasian & 1 indian. Now there is speculation that this was all a comedy sketch or for internet fame, which I don’t doubt could be true. Regardless of this, the discussion that takes place is depressingly close to some of the conversations I had growing up in these schools. While it’s funny to them, people will say these exact words and mean them seriously. Also there is usually shouting involved.

If you don’t want to bother sitting through the whole clip, my favorite part is around 2:18.
